THE ART OF DRAWING PEOPLE IN
Let’s start by observing one of the most visually iconic publications in existence… National Geographic.
When I was young, my parents signed me up for a subscription to Nat Geo and I grew to be eager for each new issue to arrive.
There was something about each issue that drew me in. I don’t think it was the yellow border and I know I didn’t care to read the actual articles.
THE PHOTOS DREW ME IN!
The photos that National Geographic curates are known for possessing one distinct quality that every piece of content desperately needs… INTRIGUE!
As I began photography, and specifically when I began creating imagery for businesses and brand, I realized the power and necessity of considering how to make a photo draw people in.
I BEGAN TAKING PHOTOS WITH THE INTENTION OF DRAWING PEOPLE IN!
For example, consider this photoshoot I did focused on coffee lifestyle…
I believe that there are a few elements that make this gallery of photos particularly intriguing to a consumer...
Relevant Context
These photos tell a story about something people are familiar with: Drinking coffee while working, reading, relaxing, etc. This familiarity allows viewers to easily envision themselves in such a story.
Warm Tones
The visual quality of these photos provide the viewer with a sense of warmth that they can associate with a relaxing morning sipping on a nice cup of coffee. This is accomplished through the use of wood tones, warm natural light, and cozy wardrobe.
Stunning Contrast
Visually speaking, photos that contain visually pleasing amounts of contrast are more intriguing. Contrast forces the viewers eyes to gravitate to the subject while also exploring the elements of shadow and highlights. The directional natural light in this photoshoot creates stunning contrast that invokes the feeling of a early morning sunrise coming in through the nearby window.
Every piece of content you create has the potential to be as visually appealing as the cover of a National Geographic magazine or as ordinary as stock photos.
But, creating content that draws people in is something that requires intentionality, consideration, and creativity.
That’s what makes it art.
Consider practicing THE ART OF DRAWING PEOPLE IN throughout your content and watch as viewership increases.
